Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly on Monday ordered immediate action to identify land for the construction of 60,000 new housing units in Alexandria, aiming to relocate residents living in buildings at risk of collapse, according to a Cabinet statement. The directive came during the prime minister's inspection visit to the coastal governorate, where he reviewed a wide range of urban development plans. "This project is about saving lives," Prime Minister Madbouly said, instructing officials to begin groundwork immediately and secure funding mechanisms for the project. Alexandria Governor Ahmed Khaled said that a full survey of the hazardous buildings had already been conducted, and authorities were ready to act once land was allocated. The housing units will serve as permanent alternatives for residents of structurally unsound apartment blocks, many of which are subject to removal orders. Minister of Housing Sherif El-Sherbiny confirmed that his ministry would coordinate with local authorities to provide suitable land for the large-scale housing development. The move is part of a broader government strategy to modernise Egypt's urban landscape, improve living standards, and address long-standing safety concerns in older districts.
