Egypt is accelerating efforts to localise the manufacturing of electromechanical equipment for its water and sanitation projects, as part of a broader industrial push aimed at boosting self-sufficiency and regional exports, the Ministry of Housing said Wednesday. Deputy Housing Minister Sayed Ismail met with executives from a global technology alliance to explore domestic production of smart metres, pumps, and control systems. The company plans to begin local manufacturing within three months, producing around 250,000 metres annually with over 75 per cent local content, the statement added. The ministry did not disclose the name of the global alliance involved in the talks. The move is part of Egypt's drive to prioritise local industry in national infrastructure, reduce reliance on imports, and establish the country as a manufacturing hub for export to East Africa and the Gulf. Ismail said the government would provide full support to firms investing in local production, particularly those aligned with Egypt's national water strategy, which focuses on desalination, wastewater reuse, and private sector partnerships. The announcement follows a series of policy measures aimed at expanding industrial capacity and improving water efficiency, as Egypt seeks to diversify resources and attract foreign and domestic investment into its infrastructure sector.
