Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty discussed on Sunday evening with US President Joe Biden's Senior Adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs and High-Level Africa Adviser, Masad Boulos, the latest developments in Libya, Sudan, and the Great Lakes region. Abdel-Aty reviewed the outcomes of the trilateral mechanism meeting of Libya's neighbouring countries, held in Cairo on May 31, with the participation of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia. The meeting underscored the need to preserve security and stability across Libya, safeguard its national resources, and respect its unity and territorial integrity. It also stressed the importance of the withdrawal of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libya, as well as the dismantling of armed militias, as a means to restore peace and stability. Boulos agreed with Abdel-Aty on the importance of achieving stability in Libya and ending the current division. On Sudan, Abdel-Aty reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast support for the country, stressing the need to uphold its unity, stability, national institutions, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He highlighted Egypt's commitment to positively engaging with regional and international efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire, to end the humanitarian crisis affecting the Sudanese people. Both sides agreed to elevate coordination between Egypt and the United States and with other key stakeholders on ending the ongoing war in Sudan. The call also covered developments in the Great Lakes region. Abdel-Aty welcomed the US-led efforts that resulted in the signing of a declaration of principles between the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda in Washington on April 25, aimed at achieving peace, stability, and economic development in eastern DRC. He described it as a significant step toward a lasting peace agreement, boosting the prospects for regional and continental stability. Egypt and the United States agreed to continue working together towards this shared goal. Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English Subediting: M. S. Salama
