Egypt's House of Representatives approved a €61.5 million financing and grant agreement (equivalent to 3.47 billion Egyptian pounds) to implement the third phase of the El-Gabal El-Asfar wastewater treatment plant. This includes €50 million in concessional financing and a €1.5 million grant from the French Development Agency, alongside a €10 million grant from the European Union (EU). The plant, one of the largest in Egypt and the Middle East, currently serves 12 million people in Greater Cairo. The first phase provides 1.5 million m3/day treatment capacity, the second phase 1 million m3/day, and the third phase will add an additional 1 million m3/day. Upon completion, the plant will serve around 17.5 million people. The project supports water reuse for agriculture, addresses water management challenges, promotes economic growth, protects public health with advanced wastewater treatment technologies, combats climate change, and reduces pollution. Development financing has also helped implement other projects such as Bahr El-Baqar and El-Mahssama water treatment plants, aiding sustainable economic growth.
