Egypt on Saturday welcomed the appointment of Hussein Al-Sheikh as Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Deputy President of the State of Palestine. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed Egypt's support for the move, which comes within the framework of the Palestinian Authority's reform efforts announced during the Arab Extraordinary Summit held in Cairo last March. The step aims to strengthen the internal front and support the Palestinian people's legitimate rights at this critical and historic juncture for the Palestinian cause. Egypt stressed that it will continue to provide full support to the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle to end the Israeli occupation, exercise their right to self-determination, and establish an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Egypt also reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts to resume a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, and contribute to early recovery efforts, reconstruction, and alleviating the humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people.
