Egypt's PM reviews Light Rail Transit project progress
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 13 - 02 - 2025

Egypt's Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly held a meeting on Wednesday evening to review the progress of the remaining phases of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in East Cairo, according to a statement published by the Cabinet.
Madbouly emphasised the critical role of public transport modes in accelerating the development of new cities and providing modern, high-quality, and safe transport options, the statement added.
He praised the efficient operation of the LRT project, which is already transporting thousands of commuters to the new cities east of Cairo and the New Administrative Capital (NAC), particularly employees.
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development Kamel El-Wazir outlined the project's scope, noting that the LRT spans approximately 113 kilometres with 20 stations across five phases.
The first phase, spanning 65.63 kilometres with 11 stations, is operational, connecting Adly Mansour Station to East Cairo cities like Salam, Obour, Mostaqbal, Shorouk, and Badr, with extensions to 10th of Ramadan City and NAC.
The second phase, from NAC Airport Station to Arts and Culture City, is finished. The third phase, 62 per cent complete, will extend from the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ Station to Central NAC Station, integrating with high-speed train.
Planning for the fourth phase, which covers a distance of 16 kilometres with three stations, has been completed, and implementation is currently underway. Meanwhile, the fifth phase of the project, spanning 8 kilometres, is still under study.
