Egypt signs deal for green ammonia production project in Damietta
Published in Amwal Al Ghad on 29 - 06 - 2024

Egypt signed on Saturday an agreement to establish a green ammonia production project in Damietta. Witnessed by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly during the Egypt-EU Investment Conference, the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (Echem) and Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) have signed the agreement with Norway's renewable energy firm Scatec and Fertiliser maker Yara.
With initial investment estimated at around $890 million, the project targets an annual production of 150,000 tons of green ammonia. It will generate 480 MW of renewable energy from wind and solar sources.
The green ammonia will be produced using MOPCO's existing production facilities. The Norwegian Yara Norway has secured a 20-year offtake agreement for the project's green ammonia output.
Moreover, the project will include a seawater desalination plant and a marine jetty for green ammonia export from Damietta Port. It is expected to commence operations in 2027.
