Foot and mouth disease causes more livestock deaths

The spread of foot and mouth disease through Egypt continued to cause livestock deaths on Tuesday. The disease appeared in Minya Governorate in Upper Egypt on 6 March.
Dr. Farid Jaafar of the Kafr al-Sheikh veterinary department announced the death of 37 cattle on Tuesday, bringing the number of cattle deaths to 92, while the number of infected cases rose to 603, nearly 400 of which have recovered from the disease since last week.
In Daqahlia Governorate, the deaths of 38 cattle from the disease were announced on Tuesday. Sources at the Daqahlia Directorate of Veterinary Medicine said the new cases bring the total number of deaths caused by the disease in Daqahlia to 150, out of 3,223 known cases.
The Veterinarians Syndicate head in Sharqiya Governorate, Dr. Hamed Attiya, said that deaths caused by foot and mouth disease rose to 1,280 since the beginning of the outbreak.
In Suez Governorate, the Directorate of Veterinary Medicine announced the death of 145 head of cattle, while the number of infected cases rose to over 1,000.
Fifty-two head of cattle died in Damietta, while veterinary units detected 86 cases of suspected infection. Meanwhile, sources said officials had been instructed not to disclose the number of dead animals to avoid spreading panic.
In Beni Suef, Undersecretary of the Veterinary Medicine Sector Dr. Abdel Rahim Muheisen announced the infection of 125 head of cattle, of which 18 died.
Director General of Veterinary Medicine in Assiut Qadri Abdel Wahab said the total number of suspect cases reached 227 cases, while the number of dead animals reached 32.
In Luxor, head of the Directorate of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Hanaa Abdel Magid said that five cattle died of the disease and 34 became infected on Tuesday, bringing the number of deaths to 12, including calves and sheep, and the number of infected cases to 145, all of which are being treated. In Aswan, the number of infected cases rose to 40.
The South Sinai and Red Sea Governorates are free of the disease, according to officials in both places.
