MPs named in healthcare scandal to be excluded from October elections
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 25 - 07 - 2010

Leaders of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) have prepared a list of members of parliament who they believe to be involved in the state-funded medical care scandal, according to a source inside the NDP. Those on the list will be not be able to run as NDP candidates in the upcoming People's Assembly elections.
Members prepared the list in spite of ongoing investigations. According to a source, even if some MPs are proven innocent, “suspicions will continue to surround the vindicated members, which the NDP cannot accept. Besides, investigations will not be finished for three months, while the elections are scheduled for October.”
The Public Funds Prosecution finished reviewing reports submitted by the Central Auditory Organization, the Administrative Control Authority, and the Ministry of Health. According to a source in the judiciary, the reports revealed a number of violations concerning state-funded medical clearances, which were obtained by MPs for their acquaintances. Clearances to be scrutinized were chosen randomly.
Prosecution has not yet determined whether the incidents are an administrative breach or a criminal offence.
Some MPs named on the list told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the Ministry of Health fabricated the scandal in order to cancel medical decrees issued in favor of MPs. According to them, the accusations are baseless.
Authorities are due to testify in front of the prosecution.
