An unnamed government official has accused several prominent political figures of being involved in recent acts of violence, including those outside the cabinet building, which started last Friday. The official, who made the accusations to Al-Masry Al-Youm but requested anonymity, specifically named Ayman Nour, president of the Ghad al-Thawra Party, Rami Lakah, president of the Reform and Development Party, political activist Asmaa Mahfouz, and Sobhi Wahdan, former MP and member of the disbanded National Democratic Party. The official warned that Egypt could turn into another Syria due to current clashes between the people and the army, repeating the conflict between the people and the police during the initial uprising that toppled Mubarak. The same official claimed that those arrested during the violence confessed that they were paid and given drugs by Nour, Lakah, Mahfouz, and Wahdan, to ignite the situation. “I shall sue the military council if I am officially accused of such a hoax,” said Ayman Nour. For his part, Rami Lakah accused the supporters of Mubarak's regime of inciting the events. “They are the ones who are setting the country on fire,” he said. “And most of them are ex-convicts.” “The military council is following in the footsteps of the Mubarak regime,” said Asmaa Mahfouz. “They come up with accusations without proof.” “I have not set foot in Tahrir Square, even during the revolution,” said Sobhi Wahda, rejecting the accusation.
