More than a thousand workers at El Nasr Clothing and Textile Company (KABO) are protesting for a second day on Abu Qir Street in central Alexandria. The workers decry what they call the ignorance of KABO officials toward their working problems and a delay in disbursing their pay. The protest has hindered traffic, leading to clashes between angry drivers and the workers. "We want our rights. ... No to squandering public funds," one sign at the protest said. Alexandria Governor Osama al-Fouly, accompanied by a number of police and army officials, tried to convince the protesters to end their strike, promising in return to help solve their problems. But the workers rebuffed his attempt and threatened to continue their strike until their demands are met and the money owed them is paid. The workers had organized several protests inside the company's headquarters, which later developed into a major strike as negotiations with KABO's board failed. The employees said they had been promised better salaries and faster disbursement of allowances, but nothing changed. The employees also want executives allegedly involved in squandering company resources to be held accountable, the board to be removed and the payment system to be fairly restructured.
