Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid on Thursday discussed ways of boosting bilateral trade with Kenya at a meeting with Kenyan Trade and Industry Minister Ali Mwakwere. “We have agreed to develop commercial transport and logistics,” Rachid said. He went on to note the "numerous investment opportunities" in Kenya, especially in the fields of processed food, medicine and electric appliances, all of which Egypt is known for producing. According to Rachid, Egypt's main exports to Kenya include sugar, flour, cement, television sets, ceramics and paint. Egypt's primary imports from Kenya, he pointed out, include tea, plastics, tobacco, ink and wood. In related news, the Egyptian Chemicals and Fertilizers Export Council plans to send delegations to Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Tanzania to explore opportunities to supply these markets with Egyptian-manufactured chemical products. “Our total exports to Zambia and Tanzania currently stand at only LE100 million,” said council president Walid Helal. “But we're hoping to eventually increase this figure to US$100 million.” “Last month, we signed export agreements with both Kenya and Uganda worth US$70 million,” Helal added, noting that the council hoped to sign similar agreements with 18 other African countries.
