CAPMAS report highlights Egypt''s failing cotton production

A government report released on Sunday reveals an 11.4 decline in Egyptian 2008/2009 cotton production in comparison to the previous year.
Cotton production decreased during the 2008/2009 season to 1.79 million quintals, down from 2.02 million quintals in 2007/2008, the Central Agency for Public Mobility and Statistics (CAPMAS) report said.
Cotton plantation coverage shrunk to 284,000 feddans in 2008/2009, down from 313,000 in 2007/2008, constituting a 9.3 percent decrease, according to the report.
An Arab Union of Textile Workers meeting earlier this month in Cairo urged the activation of funds bolstering cotton production, with the aim of encouraging farmers to plant cotton and thus pump investment into textile companies that are in need of machinery upgrades.
Analysts believe Egypt's cotton textiles are constantly dwindling due to poor government funding for the commodity known to be of the highest global quality.
