Covering up the Cover up
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 29 - 04 - 2009

The General Assembly has punished the independent MP Alaa Abdel-Moneim by directing the blame to him because he uncovered the list of 77 deputies in the parliament to Al-Masry Al-Youm, including 58 members of the National Party, whose membership the Court of Cassation has deemed null and void!
Deputy Abdel-Moneim has recalled with his enormous uproar which was raised in the Council yesterday memories of days when the Congress was truly a Congress under the dome, with people like Momtaz Nassar, Mahmoud Alkady, or Alawi Hafiz. They were worth a hundred of today's parliamentarians!
It must be that Abd Almoneim knows well that the member who spent millions in order to get immunity and whatever other gains come with it, is ready to spend millions more, in order to stay in Congress, whatever the price. His stay is a substantial investment that he doesn't want to lose after having spent years of his membership developing it!
Abdel Moneim also knows, and we know with him as well, that membership in the Council, for many, is not necessarily in the public's interest, but is still a means to achieve specific goals, not including the legislation of society, and government control.
Such roles which are supposed to be the foremost concern of any serious Deputy is not one of those goals, and they are not afraid of criticism reports, nor even the requirements of the Supreme Constitution!
No one knows what was required of the independent deputy, if he had found in his hand a list with such a number. Was he required to have a party for them or call for the Legislative Committee of the Council to explain to the public opinion the position of each one of them separately, and their overall position to the Council?!
If the legislative committee has for a long time covered up a list of this kind, whatever the number of its members, was the courageous deputy required to cover up the cover up?!
Dr. Sorour has revealed the naked truth, when he addressed the deputy in the vote on the punishment, saying - in essence - that the National Congress on the list, not only wants to slaughter Ala Abdalmoneim, but they want to refer his papers to the Mufti, if they could!

There is no doubt that to blame and what is more than blame must be done at the level of National Congress, who have easily raised their hands to agree on the punishment of the MP, instead of opening the entire file, and discussing it openly and honestly, and exonerating those who deserve it, it was closed, and Deputy Alaa Abdel-Moneim has been chased only because he shouted in the face of error!
If we are always calling for the filtering tables of dead voters, who vote in every election, it should have been more proper to purge the memberships of the Council of those whose consciences has died, not with a death certificate of course, but with a report from the Court of Cassation!
