An official source at Safaga Port said the port is facing difficulties in shipping back the Russian wheat due to technicalities in the unloading system, as it is designed to unload freight only, not ship it. Hisham Ragab, Assistant Minister of Commerce for Legal Affairs, said the Attorney General is currently checking the documents of the 52,000 ton shipment that was seized at the port in order to get re-exported, after there was conflicting reports about it from the regulatory bodies. Ashraf el-Attal, President of the Egyptian Traders Company, said the Attorney General's investigation does not make sense, as the shipment was rejected and will be re-exported. Dr. Ali Suleiman, head of the Agricultural Quarantine, called for forming a new body to check all the wheat that comes to Egypt, pointing out that Egypt imports about 8 million tons and produces about 5 million tons, a large part of which is subsidized by the government. Meanwhile, an official at the Council of Crop Exports warned that the companies exporting fruits might incur losses due to Russia's response to the action taken against it by the Egyptian authorities. He said Russia rejected a 240 ton shipment of Egyptian oranges for the second time in less than two months for allegedly being infected with the fruit fly, although the results of the examination at the port confirmed it was free of any disease.
