Cairo - Member of the Council of Senior Scholars and former President of the Islamic Research Academy, Dr. Mohamed Zaki, said that the a parliamentary delegation decision to pay a tribute visit to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayyib, affirms the abject failure of any attempt to interfere in Al-Azhar's affairs. On March 6, Abu Hamed announced his intention to submit to parliament the proposal amending Law No. 103 of 1961, which regulates Al-Azhar affairs. Abu Hamed's proposal introduces substantial amendments to the method of appointing the members of the Council of Senior Scholars. He also introduced an article to hold Sheikh Al-Azhar accountable through gradual sanctions that would start with the right to blame, all the way up to the right to disqualify him from the sheikdom of the Al-Azhar. Zaki added that: "Interfering in Al-Azhar is an act of treason on Egypt, and anyone who works to tarnish the image of Al-Azhar or undermine its status is working against and tampering with Egyptian national security."
