Rome - An Egyptian national, Hany El-Sayed Mohamed, mysteriously died in an Italian prison last week. El-Sayed was reportedly found dead in an Italian prison last week, with the Italian authorities reporting that the citizen was found dead after committing suicide. In an official statement on the case, Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted Counselor Ayman Tharwat, chargé d'affaires of the Egyptian embassy in Rome, who said: "As the Egyptian embassy is following up on the investigations carried out by the Italian authorities over the death of Egyptian national Hani Hanafi Sayed Mohammad in an Italian prison in the island of Sicily, our Consul in Rome went to Sicily Island, where he met with the prison officials, in which the incident occurred, the Chief prosecutor and the security director so as to find out what the investigation has reached so far." The statement adds: "The consul requested to look at the post-mortem examination report and to catch on the rest of the details related to the deceased's conditions before death." "The Consul asserted to Italian officials that Egyptian authorities are eager to finalize the investigation as soon as possible. The Consul also was present during the procedures of shipping the body back to Egypt for burial." Tharwat stressed that the Egyptian embassy in Rome will first-hand follow and get updates of the investigations from the Italian authorities in preparation for announcing the accurate results once obtained.
