The Australian government is drafting a law to withdraw citizenship from dual-nationals who fight with jihadist groups in the Middle East or launch attacks in the country, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Tuesday, Le Figaro reported. "The new powers will apply to dual citizens who fight with or support groups such as ISIL, as well as so-called 'lone wolves', whether in Australia or on foreign soil," Abbott said in a news release, referring to Islamic State. Australia believes that hundreds of its citizens have joined jihadist groups in Iraq and Syria and benefit from the logistical support of nearly 150 citizens in Australia. Attorney General George Brandis said that 40 to 50% of jihadists fighting abroad have dual nationality. Australia has recently toughened its anti-terrorist legislation, sending anyone who travels to Syria and Iraq to 10 years in prison. Abbot asserted that the withdrawal of nationality will be subject to the control of the judiciary and will not apply to Australian citizens who are not holders of a second passport.
