Dozens of people were killed and scores of others were injured in separate road accidents in Ismailia and Alexandria early Friday, security officials said. At least eight people were killed when a bus collided with a lorry and a car on the Cairo-Ismailia desert highway. According to the officials, the accident occurred when the speeding car collided with the lorry, which was moving in the opposite direction, on the desert highway near Cairo. The collision severely damaged the vehicles and claimed the lives of eight people. The people who were injured were taken to nearby hospitals in the 10th of Ramadan city. In another serious accident near Cairo, police sources said dozens of passengers were killed and more than 50 were injured in a crash involving around 50 cars and trucks on the Cairo-Ismailia desert highway, in dense fog which severely affected visibility, this morning. Police and paramedics rushed to the scene, and all the injured were moved to various hospitals in Cairo. Road accidents are common in Egypt due to poor road maintenance and leniently applied traffic laws, with around 12,000 lives being lost every year, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO).
