The British Role
Published in Albawaba on 20 - 12 - 2015

It seems as though the United Kingdom is not part of the political scene in the Middle East, as much as it was during the heyday of imperialism.
In the Balfour Declaration, Britain recognised the Zionist movement and promised it a Jewish state in the land of Palestine, thus setting the scene for a confrontation between Jews and Arabs.
MI6, the British Secret Intelligence Service, collects intelligence to support the British Government and it avoids making mistakes which could turn into scandals, as happens with the United States' (US') CIA, whose brutal torture of the Guantanamo detainees was exposed in a report by the American Congress. What is strange is, that at the same time, the US State Department has been criticising Egypt for alleged human rights violations.
However, the UK is still part of the political scene despite appearances, since it is hosting terrorist groups and giving them refugee resettlement status, as long as they are not active within Britain.
It seems strange for Britain to close its embassy and for Canada to do the same a day later, because of the US Congress' announcement of the CIA's involvement in the brutal torture of prisoners and the use of illegal methods to extract information and confessions from the "terrorists", in the wake of the World Trade Center disaster, in New York.
Terrorist groups are aiming at US targets, so the question is, "Why is Britain taking all these precautions at this time?"
The UK allows the MB to use its judicial courts against Egypt and the MB has filed a lawsuit at the British Supreme Court, accusing Egyptian officials of "war crimes", and calling for the arrest of those officials if they ever visit the UK.
What effect would a decision issued in this regard have on relations between the UK and Egypt?
The main reasons for closing the two embassies in Garden city are as follows:
A. The Garden city residents have taken a case calling for the removal of the safety barriers set up in the district.
B. The UK is trying to give the impression that the situation in Egypt is unstable, in order to bring pressure to bear on the current government.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued a statement about the situation.
Egypt is fighting a multi-faceted battle and it needs to draw up a clear and realistic policy to uphold justice and to defend the country.
