ON MONDAY the Presidential Elections Commission (PEC) officially announced that Muslim Brotherhood presidential candidate Mohamed Mursi and Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafik will face each other in a run-off vote on 16 and 17 June. Mursi led in the first round with 25 per cent of the vote, closely followed by Shafik on 23.66 per cent according to figures released by PEC. Hamdeen Sabahi came third with 20.72 per cent. Mohamed Mursi won 5,764,952 votes, Ahmed Shafik 5,505,327, Hamdeen Sabahi 4,820,273, Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh 4,065,239 votes (17.47 per cent) and Amr Moussa 2,588,850 votes (11.13 per cent). PEC Chairman Farouk Sultan, who also heads the Supreme Constitutional Court, confirmed that four appeals filed against the final vote count had been rejected. He did not reveal which presidential candidates had lodged the appeals. Turnout in the first round reached 46.42 per cent of eligible voters, with 23,265,516 valid votes cast, and 406,720 spoiled ballots.
