Ahli vs Bayern
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 05 - 01 - 2012

Egypt's league title holders meet the Bundesliga giants in Doha on Saturday, Ahmed Morsy reports
Egyptian champions Ahli meet Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in a friendly in Qatar on Saturday. The friendly comes after Ahli finalised the financial details of the deal with the sponsors of the game. The six-time African champions will receive $200,000 in fees. The game will be broadcast by Ahli's satellite channel.
"The friendly with Bayern will be a good experience for the team on the tactical level and will please the fans, too," Ahli football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz said.
To help, the Egypt Football Association (EFA) agreed to postpone Ahli's domestic league game against Military Production to 11 January.
The friendly comes as Bayern Munich launch their winter preparatory camp in Doha.
Defending league champions Ahli, who currently stand second in the table, today play 12- placed Al-Gaish in the 12th week of the national championship. Fifth-placed Ismaili host Military Production, and six-placed Misr Lilmakassah clash with Spinning Mehalla, who occupy 18th place.
The rest of the week's games were scheduled to be played yesterday and the day before. Enppi, who lie in 13th place, were due to host third- from-bottom Smouha while league leaders Haras Al-Hedoud were scheduled to meet 10th-placed Beni Suef Telephones yesterday. On Tuesday, fourth-placed Zamalek were to play against Petrojet and Dakhlayah, who are rock bottom in the 19-team tournament, were to meet Police Union who are second.
Elsewhere, the EFA announced on Sunday that Ahli are the winners against Spinning Mehalla 2- 0 by default after the game was called off in the second half.
The ill-fated clash on New Year's eve was called off in the 55th minute after Spinning Mehalla's fans invaded the pitch in protest against a controversial own goal which would have been the equaliser for Ahli. The score at the time was 2-1 for Mehalla. An own goal by Mehalla defender Amr Ramadan tied it but the ball slipped out of the goal via a torn netting, leading the crowds to believe it was not a goal. When referee Yasser Abdel-Raouf whistled for a goal, pandemonium broke out.
Mehalla have been ordered to play their next three home games away. Moreover, Mehalla's midfielder Ahmed Magdi was handed a two- match ban for misconduct towards the referee.
The stiff sanctions were nothing new for Mehalla which witnessed crowd trouble with Misri in their first game of the season.
"The officials are undoubtedly responsible because it is unacceptable not to follow such routine procedures as checking the goal nets before the game," Competitions Committee chief Amer Hussein said.
"Officials usually act like they are testing the nets but it never actually happens.
"The regulations favour Ahli in this case as the visiting team should be considered winners."
Mehalla players continued to deny a goal had been scored even after the saga was over and TV replays confirmed the goal.
"Of course I'm sure it's not a goal. I was covering the near post and it was impossible for the ball to get past me," Mehalla keeper Sameh Ali told Melody Sport TV after the game.
In other news, former Ahli and Sudanese Merriekh coach Hossam El-Badri signed a two-year contract with Enppi, succeeding Mokhtar Mokhtar who was fired last week after the team's poor run of results.
"The Enppi board reached an agreement with coach Hossam El-Badri to lead the football team," a statement on the club's official website said.
The petroleum side are currently struggling in the bottom of the domestic league with only nine points from 10 matches leaving them in 13th place. Just a few months earlier Enppi had won the Egyptian cup, beating powerhouses Ahli, then Zamalek in the final.
Mokhtar had led Enppi to the cup before the surprising downturn in form which saw the side win only one league match.
In El-Badri's coaching debut, Enppi beat Military Production 2-0.
