“Submerged – on Rivers and their Interrupted Flow”, exhibition showcases works by Ala Younis and Alia Mossallam, Carolina Caycedo, Hashem El-Nahas, Asunción Molinos Gordo, Marianne Fahmy. “Submerged – on Rivers and their Interrupted Flow” is a full programme extends over more than two months offers screenings, talks and a workshop.
Through artistic practices that appropriate satellite images and archival material, listen to oral histories and engage with the materiality of water, the works in the exhibition underline the difference between an everyday relationship to the river and to nature vs the macro plans made from looking at maps and territory from above. Younis and Mossallam take us back to the construction of the High Dam. The artist and social historian look at the process of building the dam; not purely as a hydraulic project but as the construction of a symbol of modernisation, political independence and complex relationship with the Soviet Union.
While Carolina Caycedo's audio-visual essays trace the Yuma (Magdalena River), its tributaries, and the river basins where a majority of the Colombian population live. Submerged also contains a selection of books suggested by researchers that form an introduction to urgent issues of water and agriculture in Egypt. Through this material and some of the accompanying events the programme tries to open a discussion about the representation of the rural and peasants in cinema, literature and visual art. This is an attempt to understand and debate the relationship between the symbolic violence of cultural productions and the systemic violence rural communities are resisting (9 October -15 December).
