Glittering in Agadir
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 05 - 04 - 2018

Egypt's national taekwondo team collected two gold medals and two silver at the 2018 African Championship G4, held in Agadir, Morocco, from 29-30 March.
Nour Hussein won the last medal for the Egyptians, a gold in the 49kg category. Hussein was crowned the winner of the final against Tunisia by swinging after the match ended in a draw.
Wael Abdel-Rahman earlier won a gold medal in the 68kg category, Maysoon Farouk took silver in 67kg and Mohamed Farag also a silver medal in 58kg.
The team participated in the tournament with 15 players, eight men and seven women.
The Senior Championship, classified as a G4 event, saw men and women each compete across eight categories at the Inbiaat Sports Hall.
“It gives me great pleasure and an honour, in my capacity as vice-president of the WT (World Taekwondo) and President of World Taekwondo Africa, to extend this invitation to all African countries to participate in the event,” Ahmed Fouli said. “This is a great opportunity for all players to experience the new competition's rules of this G4 tournament. Our African athletes will be able to benefit from this, with this event being held on our African continent.”
Rwanda topped the medals table after hosting last year's African Para Taekwondo Championships in Kigali. They secured two gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Head coach Irene Bagire is confident about his team's chances of retaining the title.
Also due to take place in Agadir is the World Taekwondo President's Cup for the Africa region.
Meanwhile, two Egyptians won silver medals at the recent 13th French Open World Taekwondo tournament. Hedaya Malak collected a 67kg silver while Farag hauled in a 58kg silver in the tournament.
In 2016, the 24-year-old Malak won a bronze medal, bringing Egypt its third medal in the Rio Olympics in Brazil.
Being just 17, Farag recently joined the Egyptian team.
