After a long hiatus for renovation, the Grant gallery's strong comeback is a thrilling exhibition by former culture minister and renowned abstract expressionist Farouk Hosni. Hosni shows 32 paintings in various media that rely on observation of minute detail and display a meditative disposition, achieving a rare awareness of the universe that recalls the Mediterranean of the artist's youth in Alexandria. Hosni's work is globally acclaimed for the positive energy it communicates and its eloquent colour, especially its use of black. In abstract expressionism, the artist has said, colour transforms into an unpremiditated symphony: “I don't see black as one distinct colour but, rather, as a set of colours. Here, black becomes a celebratory colour while the spatial elements define its actual shade. Actually, it is black which reveals the features of the painting. Since black is the defining colour, it has its own character and presence.” The exhibition is on until 3 April.
