Soccer on the side: Season of success
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 04 - 06 - 2013

Success was the outcome of the season for most of our Egyptian stars this year. First, Ahmed Al -Mohamadi played in nearly every single minute of Hull City's season as they finished in second place and were promoted to the Premier League alongside Cardiff and Crystal Palace. Apart from shining in most of the games he played this season, Al-Mohamadi managed to score three goals and supplied 12 assists in a very successful season for the Egyptian star. After seeing him shining in the first half of the season, Sunderland decided to use the recall clause in Al-Mohamadi's contract to recall him from Hull City on 16 January. However, Steven Bruce pleaded to Martin O'Neill to loan him back as he considered him a key member of his squad as they chased promotion. Sunderland and O'Neill agreed to let the Egyptian go back to Hull as they could not guarantee him a place in the starting XI and the winger returned to the KC stadium for the remainder of the season to play a starring role in their promotion with several man of the match performances at the end of the season. Furthermore, Al-Mohamadi was voted as Hull City's player of the season at the annual awards ceremony on 20 April at the KC stadium which is a very big achievement given that this was only his first season at the club. Finally, Hull City is currently trying to negotiate a deal with Sunderland to turn the loan deal of Al-Mohamadi into a permanent one which will surely be welcomed by the player who feels he has settled down at the club.
Al-Mohamadi wasn't the only Egyptian to play a role in Hull City's promotion to the Premier League as two other stars in the form of Gedo and Fathi had a say in their push for promotion with the former in particular playing a key role in the second part of the season. Gedo moved to Hull City on loan alongside Ahmed Fathi on 31 January and quickly became a very popular figure at Hull as he scored five goals and supplied two assists in just 12 games to help the club seal promotion. Unfortunately, Gedo received a foot injury towards the end of the season and couldn't play in his side's last four games which prevented him from adding to his decent goal tally. It remains to be seen whether Hull City will opt for or against signing the prolific forward after knowing that his injury will keep him out of action for nearly four months. As for Fathi, he could not really play as many minutes as he would have wished but he still showed glimpses of what he can do for the club with some tireless performances in the middle of the park. However, it seems highly unlikely that Hull will sign Fathi as they'll probably go for more experienced players with Premier League knowledge.
Egyptian legend and one of Egypt's best players ever Mohamed Abu Treika wrote another chapter of success in his incredible CV as he helped Banni Yas win the Gulf Cup for the first time in their history. The Egyptian mega star scored one and set up another as his team won 2-0 at home after drawing the first leg 1-1 away from home against El Khor. Treika's brilliance in the final was not really a surprise as the star striker is known for his heroics in nearly every final he has featured in throughout his career. Treika's short stay at Banni Yas will be remembered for some vital goals and key assists including goals in the semi-final and the final of the Gulf Champions League. Thousands of fans went to Treika's last training session with Banni Yas to thank the Egyptian star for making them live the dream of lifting a trophy they badly needed.
Another Egyptian star competing for the best Egyptian player overseas this season is Mohamed Salah who simply had an incredible year at Basel. Salah alongside another Egyptian star in the form of Al- Nenni managed to clinch the league title officially in the last game of the season as Grasshopper pushed them all the way until the end of the campaign. Salah managed to score five goals in the league and set up another 10 including penalties he won. As for the Europa league, Salah was the star of Basel throughout the competition even though they lost in the semi-final against English giants Chelsea who managed to win the tournament. Salah stole the headlines in most of the big games of the competition as he scored two goals against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea plus assisting the two goals against Zenit in the quarter-finals. Salah added another two goals in the cup to take his tally for the season to nine goals and an incredible 17 assists in just 24 starts and 20 cameos which is more than great given that this was the first season for the 20-year-old in Europe.
What will please Salah most apart from winning the league and reaching the semis in the Europa league is being chosen as one of the best three young prospects in the Europa league this season which is simply an unbelievable achievement for the terrific young Egyptian. Turning to Al-Nenni, the young midfielder who moved to Basel in January was nearly as impressive as his Egyptian teammate as he quickly settled at his new club and became one of the key members in the squad and started five out of eight games in the Europa league since signing for the Swiss giants including both legs against Tottenham and Chelsea which shows his importance to the team. The sporting director at the club indicated that Al-Nenni's quick progress at the club was simply astonishing as they thought he would take some time to fit in. Basel has all but sealed a permanent deal for Al-Nenni after impressing in his loan spell this season.
In Portugal, Ahmed Hassan Kouka arrived at Rio Ave this season to kick start his European career. The 20-year-old proved to be one of the key signings of the Portuguese league this season as he bagged seven league goals and added another two in the cup to take his tally to nine goals in just 15 starts and eight cameos in a hugely productive season for the young Egyptian striker. Rio Ave's head coach indicated that the signing of Kouka was one of the main reason his side avoided relegation this season and that he's already looking forward to seeing the young lad leading the attack of his team next year.
In England, Adam Al-Abd had a mixed season with Brighton as he and his side nearly clinched a place in the Premier League but lost to Crystal Palace in the semi-finals of the play-offs. On a personal note, Al-Abd started the season really well and was a common figure in the starting 11 in every match until he lost his place towards the end of the season when he returned from suspension.
In Italy, young defender Ahmed Hegazi endured a very difficult season at his new club Fiorentina after he suffered a horrific knee injury that ruled him out of action for nearly six months. The injury came just four days after the young Egyptian star notched his first goal for the club in the Italian cup which made it even more difficult for the Egyptian as he could have been in for a very good season. However, Hegazi managed to overcome his woes and returned to action at the end of the season when he made a brief cameo against Palermo.
