Duroubgallery in Garden City is currently hosting the “Small Art Works” group exhibition that features 60 artists from different generations representing a variety of artistic movements. The exhibition comprises a variety of fields of art such as painting, illustrations, sculpture, graphic, ceramic, pottery and jewellery. It is the gallery's annual exhibition and among the participating artists is the painter Samir Fouad. His paintings on show exceed the poems and he creates them in pairs that makes the audience feel inspired by both the poet and the painter. The impression created appeared as either painted poems or poetic paintings. In this show, the artist's inspiration is the 25 January Revolution as he depicted the faces of revolutionaries overwhelmed by anger and outrage yet covered with an incomplete smile aspiring for a better tomorrow. He was also inspired by the art of graffiti that flourished after the outbreak of the revolution creating living walls.
The artworks varied between personal and symbolic portraits using symbols that reflect the artist's impulsive reaction towards the historical moments, symbols and events of the revolution such as the Egyptian flag, Nahdat Misr (Egypt's Renaissance) statue and the two iron lions standing on both sides of Qasr Al-Nil Bridge. Since 1971, he has held several private exhibitions in Egypt and Britain. He has also participated in a number of collective shows in Egypt as well as in the Mexico International Biennale for aquarelle colours in 2002 and the 4th Luxor International Painting Forum in 2011.
The exhibition is running through 7 January.
