Preview: Ahly aim to edge closer to final Egyptian Premier League phase Ahly have an easy test against minnows Ragaa in the Egyptian Premier League on Thursday
Ahly will be looking to boost their chances of a top-two Group A finish when they take on debutants Ragaa in the Egyptian Premier League on Thursday. The Reds enter the game on the back of a thumping 4-1 league victory of Maqassa, a morale-boosting win that ended a dismal run which saw the African champions bow out of the Champions League last-16 and secure just a single point in their last two league games. Another win over lowly Ragaa also seems on the cards, given that the newcomers are currently languishing in penultimate position with only 11 points from 13 games. And should the second-placed Ahly win the game, they could well close on leaders Smouha to less than three points in case the Alexandrians stumbled against fifth-placed Maqassa earlier in the day. Ahly will also be bearing in mind that they will be having a tough test against group rivals Arab Contractors, who are currently just one point adrift of the Cairo giants, the following week. Ahly, however, will be missing defender Rami Rabia through suspension as manager Mohamed Youssef omitted Ahmed Shokry and El-Sayed Hamdy, who was on target against Ragaa in the first half of the season, from the squad. The top two teams of the Egyptian Premier League Groups A and B advance to a mini-league phase, whose winner claims the domestic competition's title.
