Ahly's disheartened coach calls for patience after another defeat Mohamed Youssef, looking dejected in a news conference, says his side need some time to regain their form after suffering three defeats in five Egyptian Premier League games
Ahly's disheartened coach Mohamed Youssef called for patience after his side extended their poor Egyptian Premier League run with a stunning 1-0 loss to second-from-bottom Gouna on Saturday. Youssef appeared at a loss to explain the exact reasons for Ahly's latest slump, with a 52-minute goal from Gouna's Sherif Reda condemning them to their third loss in five league matches. As he did during the past few games, he cited injuries to key players as one of the main reasons for the team's shortcomings but he still struggled to answer some questions over the displays of particular players. "This is football. In football, anything can happen," Youssef repeatedly said, dismissing the notion that Ahly, winners of the past seven editions of the Premier League, are falling behind in the title race this season. The Red Devils are still second in Group A of the league's new format with 16 points, on level with third-placed Smouha who will leapfrog them if they win their two matches in hand. The group winners and runners-up will advance to the final four-team playoff to determine the league champion. "There is pressure on the players, especially with the difficult situation we are facing. We need time to regain our form," he added, referring to a raft of injuries which hit some key players such as winger Walid Soliman and full-backs Ahmed Fathi and Sayed Moawad. Ahly will have to quickly pick themselves up, with a tough encounter coming up against Tunisia's Sfaxien in the African Super Cup on Thursday. "We have to overcome that defeat quickly. We have a difficult match after five days and we will play in Cairo and in front of our fans," added Youssef, who led Ahly to the African Champions League title last year. "I can't predict the outcome, anything can happen. Remember that a stronger Ahly side lost the Champions League final in 2007 in Cairo."
