Mobile phone and Internet subscribers in Egypt increased in 2013, while fixed line subscribers declined, according to the latest report of the Egyptian Information and Decision Support Center.
Mobile subscribers increased by 4.05 percent to 97.47 million in September 2013 from September 2012, when they totaled 93.72 million. The annual growth rate from 2008 to 2012 was 15.25 percent.
Internet users reached 37.14 million in September 2013, an increase of 17.83 percent from 31.52 million in September 2012.
The number of land-line subscribers, however, continued to decline. The number of subscribers in September 2013 was 6.84 million, down 19.2 percent from 8.47 million in September 2012 and down 50.25 percent from 2008, when Egypt had 13.75 million fixed lines.
The percentage of users accessing the Internet through ADSL, which requires having a land-line, grew to account for 44.1 percent of all access modes in 2012, or 13.9 million, while it was 38.02 percent in 2008.
Generally, Internet users shifted away from narrowband ISDN and dial-up to broadband ADSL, USB modems and mobile Internet, the report said.
In 2012, narrowband users accounted for 9.44 percent of Internet users or 2.98 million.
Vodafone, Mobinil and Etisalat are the three main mobile services providers in Egypt. The three giants also provide high-speed internet services. Etislat is the country's main land-line provider.
