A cargo train derailed while passing through a village in Upper Egypt's Minya governorate late on Wednesday, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported. There were no casualties. Five carriages of the Assiut-to-Cairo train came off the track on a level crossing in the village of Mensafis. Train services between Cairo and the southern governorates were briefly halted while the derailed carriages were removed. The Egyptian railway system is infamous for its poor safety record and frequent accidents. The service is crumbling from outdated and poorly maintained equipment. At least 26 people were killed in November when a cargo train ploughed into a truck and a minibus at a railway crossing in Giza governorate, 35km south of Cairo. Egyptians have long complained that successive governments have done little to improve transport safety. In January 2012, 17 people died when a train transporting conscripts derailed, and in November of the same year, 51 school children were killed when a train smashed into their school bus in Upper Egypt's Assiut. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/92990.aspx
