Egypt's culture picks of the week: 19-23 January: VIDEOS An intense week full of exhibitions, music, theatre and film screenings precedes the coming weekend's third anniversary of the 2011 revolution
Sunday 19 January 2 B Continued Festival for theatre and dance in Falaki Theatre at 8pm Four theatre and dance pieces by young Egyptian directors and choreographers will be presented back-to-back on 16, 18 and 19 January. They were developed under the mentorship of Studio Emad Eddin's founder and director, Ahmed El-Attar, choreographer Mohamed Shafik, Lebanese set designer, artist and art director Hussein Baydoun, Hussein Sami (sound design and operation), and Paul Geday (light design). The festival includes: dance pieces, 'A Room Filled with Smoke' choreographed by Mounir Said and 'What's Left…' by Mohamed El-Deeb; theatre performances, 'Mirror,' directed by Yasmine Emam Beshir, and 'Triangles are My Favourite Shapes,' by Seif Abdel-Salaam. As a decades-long married couple, viewers see their quirky relationship with each other and hear about their lives as artists creating controversial pieces in the big city. 42 Abdel-Khalek Tharwat Street, Downtown, Cairo ‘Social Security' closing event at Townhouse Gallery at 7pm 'Social Security' is a short-term open studio residency programme that has been taking place at the Townhouse Gallery for the past few weeks. Participating artists hosted a series of events over the weeks and are presenting their final works while providing a traditional Peruvian dish for the audience. 10 Nabrawy Street, off Mahmoud Bassiouny Street, Downtown, Cairo ## Monday 20 January Cinema Khan: Ahlam Hend and Camillia at Doum at 7.30pm Doum culture space celebrates veteran film director Mohamed Khan by screening four of his films during January. Ahlam Hend and Camillia (Hend and Camillia's Dreams), screening Monday, was produced in 1988, starring Ahmed Zaki and Naglaa Fathi. The film shows the lives of the lower middle class of Cairo during the 80s with in-depth representation of its characters. 13 Al-Fardos Street, Agouza, Giza Experimental Danish-Egyptian fusion night at Makan at 8pm Following a workshop between Danish electronic musicians and traditional folk group Nas Makan, a performance is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday evening at the culture space Makan. Andreas Pallisgaard Hansen, Jakob Overgaard Nielsen and Emil Cold collaborate with the Egyptian folk group who play at Makan regularly on Tuesdays to produce an entirely new sound. 1 Saad Zaghloul Street, Mounira, Cairo ## Tuesday 21 January Telepoetic and Rash(a)ya concert at Falaki Theatre at 8pm Telepoetic mix acoustic and electronic sounds. The band was formed in 2009 and has been performing since their debut concert at the 100 Copies Electronic Music Festival. They have since taken part in festivals in Alexandria, Cairo and abroad, in addition to hosting their own concerts. The band will also be joined by Rash(a)ya, who are Aya Metwaly—who has been gaining momentum in the music scene in recent years—and new voice Rasha Magdy. Falaki Theatre, AUC Tahrir Campus, Downtown, Cairo Also on this day: - Experimental Danish-Egyptian fusion night at Makan at 8pm (See Monday, 20 January, for more details) Wednesday 22 January Taxi (Theatrical adaptation) at Vent at 8pm Bilingual theatrical company The Thousand Tongues will perform their adaptation of Khaled El-Khamissi's best selling book Taxiin downtown Cairo's new art space Vent on 22, 26, 27 and 29 January. The theatrical adaptation, like the book, takes an unconventional approach to style, presenting the material not on a stage but as a scattered installation throughout the space. Audiences are required to not only move through the space to watch the performers, but to interact with them and be part of the piece itself. Read more here. 6 Kasr El-Nil Street, Downtown, Cairo 'Herding Chimeras' exhibition in Darb 1718 Egyptian artist and illustrator Amro Okacha and Swiss artists Olivier Gschwend and Anthony Martins de Macedo will be displaying a collection of their work in a joint effort in Darb 1718. 'Hidden Chimeras' will feature paintings by Okacha, photography by Gschwend and poetry by de Macedo. Okacha's work, a project titled '1765.8 Miles in a Point,' explores the day-to-day similarities in the lives of an Egyptian and a Swiss citizen and the merging aspects of the two different societies they both inhabit. Gschwend, meanwhile, in 'Surrogate Language,' attempts to express himself through a series of photographs depicting artists who are themselves trying to express their own feelings in their artwork. De Macedo's poetry will be featured in the opening night performance, 'PODY,' a half-hour poetry-painting performance reflecting the shock, disenchantment and brutality he experienced while discovering Cairo. Qasr Al-Shamee Street, Al-Fakhareen – Old Cairo (Behind the Hanging Church and Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque) Thursday 23 January Thursday Market at Gezazy Shop all day Gezazy Shop has always been known for recycling old bottles and glasses into artistic lighting solutions for houses and offices. The shop hosts a flea market every Thursday for people to sell old items and handmade products. The market is open from 1pm to 10pm. Watch a video story on one of the participating artisans turning refuse and protest leftovers to models here. 250 Street, between the Arab Square and Bank Misr (behind Maadi Grant Mall), Maadi, Cairo Cairo Photo Slide Jam 2 at CIC at 6pm The brainchild of Egyptian-British photographer Laura El-Tantawy, the Cairo Photo Slide Jam is an initiative that seeks to promote photography from Egypt and explore contemporary trends and questions pertaining to the field of photography. The 'Jam' features a line-up of contemporary photographers from Egypt and beyond, who are invited to show their work to their peers and the audience, as discussions tackle the ideas and aesthetics behind the work. Coinciding with the third anniversary of the January 25 Revolution, the work presented will revolve around the political transformation that has unfolded in Egypt since 2011. The event is curated by Amr Salahuddien. 22 Abdel Khaled Tharwat Street, 4th floor, Downtown, Cairo Note: Due to expected protests on the Egyptian Revolution's third anniversary on 25 January, many culture spaces have opted to not host events on this date and immediately before it. The likelihood of cancellation is high for those spaces that will host events on 25 January.
