Sunday 3 November Opening of Kalam Lel Shabab, Poetry Festival at the Italian Cultural Institute The international poetry festival will run between 3 and 7 November, including a series of lectures, seminars, poetry and music evenings, as well as a workshop for collective writing and several other events, offered by Egyptian and international poets and literary figures. Please contact the Kalam Project responsible on 02 27358791 for programming and further details. 3 El-Sheikh El-Marsafy St, in front of Beano's Cafe, Zamalek, Cairo Sharkiat Fathy Salama at Cairo Opera's open air theatre, 7pm Egyptian musician, arranger, producer, composer and 2004 Grammy Award winner Fathy Salama will indulge audiences with an electric performance by his band, Sharkiat. Salama launched his band in 1998, which continues to give hundreds of concerts and tours the world's jazz music festivals. Open Air Theatre, Cairo Opera House, Zamalek Open Mic night in Bait El-Raseef, 6pm El-Raseef styles itself as a place of expression. For the second time, they are hosting an open mic night, during which attendees will be encouraged to take a few minutes to share their thoughts or talents. Shaware'na Band in Bibliotheca Alexandrina, 7pm Shaware'na band use music and comedy as social and political comentary. The band was established in 2009 in Alexandria and has performed more than 30 times in cultural venues around the country since. They also won first prize in Jesuite's Music Festival. Shaware'na will also perform on Saturday 9 November, 8pm, in Falaki Theatre. Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Courniche, El-Azarita, Alexandria Monday 4 November Poetry Festival at the Italian Cultural Institute The day offers three events: "On Arabic poetry: New trends and the role of tradition," a lecture by Ahmed Abdel Moati Hegazy at 11am; an open workshop on collective writing by Salam Yousry, between 3 and 6pm; "More than words," a night of readings, video performances and concerts starting at 7pm. The international poetry festival will run between 3 and 7 November. Please contact the Kalam Project responsible on 02 27358791 for details. 3 El-Sheikh El-Marsafy St, in front of Beano's Cafe, Zamalek, Cairo Tuesday 5 November Opening of ‘O M G' exhibition by Bassem Samir in Safarkhan Gallery at 6.30pm This multi-media exhibition by emerging artist Bassem Samir is the product of years of observation of Egyptian society and its transformation. Through combining a mixture of conceptual photography, installation, music, video and other elements, Samir attempts to capture the state of chaos he believes Egypt to be in today. "The concepts of the works are a contemporary blend of the current revolutionary, political, social state, and the previous ancient history that is long forgotten," reads the artist's statement. Screening of ‘Power of Nightmares' documentary and discussion in Bait El-Raseef at 7pm Adam Curtus's three part documentary series, ‘The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear' (2004), compares the neoconservative movement in the United States to the Islamist movement. The film also discusses the use of the fear of “terrorism” to control populations. The film will be followed by a discussion. See the unofficial trailer below. Wednesday 6 November Asala performs at the Arab Music Festival at Cairo Opera House opening night, 7pm Syrian artist Asala will give a performance on opening night, while the Arab Music Festival will continue until 21 November. This year's festival will include performances from many popular singers and musicians, including Medhat Saleh, Hany Shaker, Angham, Khaled Selim, Ali El-Haggar, Syrian singer Safwan Bahlawan and Tunisian Lotfi Boshnaq. Cairo Opera House, Zamalek, Cairo Like Jelly in Falaki Theatre, 8pm Like Jelly will take the stage, performing their show, which mixes theatre, comedy sketches and original music, touching on various aspects of Egyptian culture, politics and society. The band was formed in 2005 and has been performing in several venues over the years. Over the past year, the band has performed their show across Egypt. Watch the first-leg of the tour in Arish, North Sinai (below) 24 El-Falaki Street, off Mohamed Mahmoud Street, American University in Cairo (Downtown Campus), Cairo Zenocrate and Zenobia (The Exiled) at Rawabet Theatre, 8pm Zenocrate and Zenobia (The Exiled) is a performance about two historical women who displayed similar power and defiance despite their different stories. The performance, presented by Teatro4m and supported by the British Council and the Spanish Embassy, is based on texts by Christopher Marlowe and Calderón de la Barca. The play has been adapted and directed by Marco Magoa, with Arabic translation by Rehab Wahdan. Thursday 7 November Telepoetic and Abdalla Miniawy in Makan, 8pm Following a workshop organised by Eka3, an organisation dedicated to the promotion and support of independent music in the region, Telepoetic mixed their electronic sound with Sufi oriented singing by Abdalla Miniawy to produce a unique musical experience. 1 Saad Zaghlould Street, in front of Saad Zaghloul's shrine, Mounira, Cairo This is a Dream Come True: Ali Abdel Mohsen at Mashrabia In his latest solo exhibition, This is a Dream Come True, which opened 20 October at the Mashrabia gallery, contemporary artist Ali Abdel Mohsen presents his artistic reflections on the events sparked by the 18-day uprising in January 2011. To Abdel Mohsen, the past two-plus years have demonstrated the driver behind human history: dreams. It is the perpetual pursuit of contrasting dreams that ultimately yields creation and destruction, according to the artist. Abdel Mohsen's exhibited collection is composed mainly of geometric shapes and patterns that help demonstrate his ideas. Exhibition runs until 14 November. Saturday 9 November Poetry evening at Doum Cultural Centre, 7.30pm The poetry evening titled Ya Bent Ya Samra (O pretty dark girl), beholds pomes from Ahmed Haddad's latest book of poetry Azizi Foulan(Dear Anonymous) published by Al-Shorouk, in 2013. The evening will be joined bymusic composer Hazem Shahine. It's worth mentioning that Doum Cultural Centre dedicates every first Saturday of the month for Music, singing, poetry and story telling. 13, El-Fardous street, Al-Agouza, Cairo Roznama 2: Collective Exhibition at Medrar Featuring artwork by nine emerging visual artists, Roznama promises an assortment of artwork dealing with contemporary socio-political realities. Presenting works in a variety of mediums, the exhibited artists strive to circumvent direct representations of events, and resort to deeper analysis to present nuanced artistic productions that provide insight into the human experience surrounding socio-political change. The artists showcased in this second edition of Roznama are; Ahmed Elshaer, Ahmed Badry, Ahmed Sabry, Asmaa Elkolaly, Kareem Osman, Mahmoud Hallwy, Marwa Elshazly, Mena Elshazly, and Wessam Quraish. Abdel Mohsen will discuss the concepts behind his latest exhibition with British-born Lebanese artist and curator Maei Yanni at the downtown gallery, where his work is displayed until 14 November. 8, Champollion Street, Downtown, Cairo. Fifth Generation: Collective Exhibition at The Art Lounge Contemporary artists Essam Darwich, Hamdi Attia, Ibrahim El Dessouki, Sami Aboul Azm & Kareem Al Qurity will showcase their latest artworks in a group exhibition opening 10 November at The Art Lounge.
