BREAKING: Egypt's sports minister appoints new board for Ahly
An interim board headed by Adel Heikal will take the charge of Ahly as former board headed by Hassan Hamdy faces charges of financial violations
Published in Ahram Online on 18 - 01 - 2014

Egyptian Sports Minister Taher Abouzeid canceled the extension of Ahly's board and temporarily appointed a new board for the Cairo giants on Saturday.
State news agency MENA reported that the board will be headed by the club former goalkeeper and star Adel Heikal until a new board is elected.
The 80-year old Heikal is considered an icon of Egyptian football and Ahly.
Ahly's board elections were scheduled to take place last May, but the former sports minister extended the duration of the current board, headed by Hassan Hamdy, due to the country's instability.
The relationship between Abouzeid and Hamdy's board grew tense recently after Ahly's board decided to sell its TV rights individually, refusing to join other Egyptian clubs' collective deal.
"Sports Minister Taher Abouzeid referred Ahly's former board to the public funds prosecution on charges of financial violations, according to the ministry's legal affairs department," MENA said.
The board headed by former Ahly defender Hamdy lodged complaints against Abouzeid to Egypt's cabinet, FIFA and the International Olympic Committee.
The 64- year old Hamdy became the club's 13thpresident in 2002.
Last October, Sports Minister Abouzeid appointed a new interim board for Ahly rivals Zamalek, ending the extension of the former board headed by Mamdouh Abbas.
