Egypt's sports minister appoints new board for Zamalek Darwish will succeed Abbas as the Zamalek Whites' board chairman, as sports minister Abouzeid seeks more stability at the White Castle
Egyptian Sports Minister Taher Abouzeid decided to temporarily appoint a new board for Zamalek on Saturday. The new board will be headed by the Cairo Giants' former president Kamal Darwish. "Abouzeid decided to appoint Darwish as a temporary president until a new board is elected," the sports ministry revealed in a statement on its official website. A definte date for the elections was not announced. Zamalek board elections were scheduled to take place last May, but the former sports minister decided to extend the duration of the current board, headed by Mamdouh Abbas, due to the country's instability. Abbas's board has recently come under fire following the team's humble results in the African Champions League, which caused the Whites' exit from the prestigious tournament. "Abbas' board didn't fulfill the necessary achievements, so the minister has decided to end its extension," explained the sports ministry statment. "Abouzeid believes that Darwish's appointment will put an end to the club's recent problems and provide more stability," concluded the statement. Zamalek die-hard fan club, the Ultras White Knights (UWK), stormed the club's headquarters on Thursday, 23 September, following a protest demanding changes to the club's leadership after the team's failure to qualify for the CAF Champions League semi-finals. They reportedly torched a number of buildings inside the club, located in the Mit Okba district near Mohandiseen. Clashes took place between security forces and the Ultras, resulting in several injuries and arrests. Zamalek have continued their barren run under Abbas, having failed to win any title since lifting the Egypt Cup trophy in 2008.
