Referendum causes postponement of Egyptian league
No decision on when Egyptian Premier League will resume following delay during constitution referendum

The fifth round of Egyptian Premier League matches, which was set to start on Saturday, has been postponed indefinitely because of the constitution referendum scheduled for 14 and 15 January.
“The matches of the fifth round of the Premier League that were set to be played on 11, 12 and 13 of January have been delayed until a date yet to be determined,” a statement read on the Egyptian FA website on Friday.
“The decision came after discussions between the EFA board, competitions' committee and the ministers of interior and sports,” the statement added.
The busy schedule might mean the postponed matches are played at the end of the season.
The Egyptian Premier League started last December after six months of suspension due to the 30 June protests that ousted president Mohamed Morsi and the turmoil that succeeded it.
The league is facing many challenges due to security fears, the crowd ban and the repetitive stoppages because of the referendum and the expected parliamentary and presidential elections over the next six months.
However, the EFA and local authorities are adamant the season will be completed after the previous two seasons were cancelled, pushing most clubs to the edge of bankruptcy, harming the entire industry and the sport itself in technical terms.
