Abou-Treika on African player of the year shortlist, Salah out Ahly stars Mohamed Abou-Treika and Ahmed Fathi on African award shortlists, Mohamed Salah excluded
Egypt and Ahly playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika is on the final shortlist for the 2013 African player of the year award, but fellow countryman Mohamed Salah, who has been in a scintillating form for Swiss club FC Basel, has been excluded, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Thursday. Abou-Treika, 35, has also been shortlisted for the best Africa-based player award, alongside Ahly teammate Ahmed Fathi. "Ten players made the cut for the flagship African Player of the Year category, and five for the African Player of the Year (Based in Africa)," stated the CAF. Abou-Treika, who helped Ahly to win their eighth African Champions League title last month, announced that he would quit football after playing in the Club World Cup in December. Salah, 21, who plays for Basel in the Swiss league, missed the final cut just a few days after winning the Swiss player of the year award. The ten players competing for the African player of the year award are: Ahmed Musa (Nigeria), Asamoah Gyan (Ghana), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Emmanuel Emenike (Nigeria), John Obi Mikel (Nigeria), Jonathan Pitroipa (Burkina Faso), Mohamed Abou-Treika (Egypt), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon), Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria) and Yaya Toure (Ivory Cost) The top five nominated for the Africa-based player of the year are Ahmed Fathy (Egypt), Mohamed Abou-Treika (Egypt), Rainford Kalaba (Zambia), Sunday Mba (Nigeria) and Tresor Mputu Mabi (DR Congo). "The head coaches of the national associations affiliated to CAF will vote in their order of preference to decide on the eventual winners of the two categories," the CAF statement added. The winners will be announced at the Glo-CAF Awards Gala scheduled for Thursday, 9 January 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria. Ivorian Yaya Toure is the reigning African Player of the Year and Mohamed Abou-Treika of Egypt for the African Player of the Year (Based in Africa).
