Egypt's Bradley hopes World Cup decider will be played in Cairo Bob Bradley hopes Egypt will be able to play their home fixture in Cairo in the anticipated World Cup qualifying playoff
Bob Bradley, who is shouldering the burden of ending Egypt's 24-year World Cup absence, hopes the Pharaohs will be able to play at the intimidating Cairo Stadium in the decisive qualifying playoff. Lingering security concerns have prompted Egypt to host Guinea in their last Group G game at the Red Sea resort of El-Gouna, around 430 kilometres south of Cairo, as the country struggles to restore order following the 3 July ouster of President Mohamed Morsi by the army. The match, which was played behind closed doors, saw Egypt secure a 4-2 victory over Guinea to finish their group-stage campaign with a 100 percent record after claiming six wins. "I hope we will be able to play in front of 80,000 spectators at the Cairo Stadium," American tactician Bradley said after the game. Egypt have not played at Cairo Stadium since beating Niger 3-0 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in October 2011. They famously beat Algeria 1-0 at the same venue in 1989 to book their place in the World Cup one year later in Italy, which marked their last appearance in the football's most prestigious showpiece. Cairo Stadium also hosted Egypt's remarkable 2-0 win over their same North African rivals in a World Cup qualifier in 2009. The Pharaohs will learn who they will face in the final two-legged playoff when the draw takes place on 16 September in Cairo.
