Egypt-Guinea World Cup qualifier to take place in Alexandria The Egyptian Football Association given the go-ahead to stage the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Guinea in Alexandria
Egypt were given the all-clear by authorities to host Guinea in their last Group G game of the World Cup qualifiers in Alexandria, the Pharaohs' assistant coach Diaa El-Sayed said on Tuesday. The match will take place at the 80,000-seat Borg El-Arab Stadium on 10 September but it was not immediately clear whether fans will be allowed to attend, given lingering security concerns in Egypt. “We are happy now. It was important to stage the match in Borg El-Arab; this is a stadium we are familiar with. We played there more than once in the World Cup qualifiers,” said Bob Bradley's assistant El-Sayed. “We are grateful to the ministries of defence and interior … playing the game outside Egypt would have had negative consequences on the team.” The political turmoil that ensued after the Egyptian army ousted President Mohamed Morsi on 3 July has led to the cancellation of the domestic Premier League for the second consecutive season. Cairo giants Ahly and Zamalek were also forced to hold their respective African Champions League games in the Red Sea resort of El-Gouna, 430km away from Cairo. Egypt's game at home to Guinea is largely meaningless after the seven-time African Champions had ensured they would finish on top of the group with one game to spare after becoming the only African team to collect maximum 15 points from five matches. They are anxiously waiting for the 16 September draw to learn who they would face in the decisive two-legged playoff as they seek to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1990. The draw will take place in Cairo. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter@AO_Sportsand on Facebook atAhramOnlineSports) http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/80094.aspx
