Culture Events: Picks for the Weekend After a long pause amid ongoing political turmoil, the culture scene is slowly making its way back this Ramadan, bringing a selection of unique events in Cairo this weekend, Thursday through Sunday (18-21 July)
Thursday 18 July Noura Mint Seymali (Mauritania) in the Hayy Festival at El-Geneina Theatre,9pm Noura Mint Seymali started her musical explorations at the age of 13 as a back-up vocalist for Dimi Mint Abbas (1958-2011), one of Mauritania's most renowned musicians. Seymali's music is a fusion of folk, reggae, blues, hip hop and zouk, with lyrics tackling contemporary issues such as desertification, women in Islamic society, and terrorism in the Maghreb, among others. Ahram Online is an official media sponsor of the Hayy Festival, which will be held 18 July to 2 August and will host five female musicians. Check out the festival's complete programme here El-Geneina Theatre, Al-Azhar Park, Salah Salem Rd, Cairo, Egypt Khadra 2013 Exhibition Opening at Darb 1718, 9pm This exhibition brings together female visual artists from Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine and Bahrain curated by Hend Elkolaly who will also be exhibiting her work. A themeless exhibition, the artists include, from Egypt: Asmaa Elkolaly, Nevien Emam, Wesam Quraish, Hala Abou Shady, Marwa Elshazly, Ola Saad, Mona Shams, Samah Nagy, Eman Osama; from Tunisia: Sarra Ben Attia, Houda Ghorbel, Ymene Chetouane. From Bahrain Waheeda Malullah; and from Palestine: Asma Ghanem. The exhibition will run until 17 August. Qasr Al-Shamee Street, Al-Fakhareen, Old Cairo (Behind the Hanging Church and Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque at Mar Girgis Metro stop) Friday 19 July Mawaweel Festival at Darb 1718, 9pm The night will begin with an act from Al-Khayal Al-Shaabi (The Popular Imagination) group, founded in 2001. The group uses theatrical work to develop the potential and consciousness of children and youth to find solutions for social problems. The troupe has travelled across the country doing street theatre in several cities and villages. At 9:45pm, the short film Ravings by young Egyptian director Alia Ayman will be screened. The film explores questions of being and the meaning of life through a short moving film shot around Cairo. Fresh voice on the scene this year, Sarah El-Gohary, will bring her indie-pop originals to the stage, with an opening act by Us w Lazq, a relatively new band that fuses different genres in original compositions. Besides the main entertainment, the bazaar will be ongoing all evening as well as children's workshops, such as art therapy, mono-print, recycling art and pottery. Qasr Al-Shamee Street, Al-Fakhareen, Old Cairo (Behind the Hanging Church and Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque at Mar Girgis Metro stop) Baheya Band at Beit El-Raseef, 9pm Baheya is made up of a group of musicians who met at the Occupy Cabinet sit-in during the months of November and December 2011 where they were singing the revolutionary songs of Sayid Darwish and Sheikh Imam, music that continues to reflect the revolutionary spirit of Egypt's streets. Beit El-Raseef is a culture space that opened earlier this year providing a space for music, poetry, co-working and workshops. Watch a video of the opening here. Beit El-Raseef is located on Street 151, off Street 9, next to Midan El-Horreya, after El-Ezaby Pharmacy and in front of National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Maadi, Cairo Rooftop City project at Townhouse Gallery, Downtown Cairo, 9pm Hany El-Dessouky, a multidisciplinary artist residing in Downtown Cairo, is working on a long term project to turn some of Cairo's building rooftops into culture spaces. This weekend he is inaugurating the project on the rooftop of Townhouse Gallery's building, hosting storytelling by Mohamed El-Saeidy and music on Oud with Ahmed Khallaf. The audience are encouraged to bring their instruments and participate. 10 Nabrawy Street, off Mahmoud Bassiouny Street, Downtown, Cairo Ramadan Nights at Artellewa, 10pm Located in Ard El-Lewa, the art space will host a series of cultural events on Fridays in Ramadan. This Friday, they will host a play by Third Eye Theatre troupe followed by an oriental music night. Read more on Artellewa here. 19 Mohamed Ali El-Eseary Street, Ard El-Lewa, Giza Saturday 18 July Music Therapy lecture at Shababeek Centre, 9pm Khaled Salem, bass player and music therapy researcher, will host a workshop that includes a lecture on music therapy, and a group therapy session. Shababeek also hosts regular art therapy sessions. 20 Main Street of Moqattam, El-Nafoura Street, Moqattam El-Aragoz we Khayal El-Zel at Beit El-Suheimy, 9.30pm Dr Nabil Bahgat presents his puppet production "El-Aragoz we Khayal El-Zel" (The Puppet and the Shadow) in the historical space Beit El-Suheimy for Ramadan. Puppetry represents an integral part of Egypt's folkloric arts, especially the character of 'Al-Aragoz'. Off Sharia Muizz El-Din, north of Khan El-Khalili, near the Aqmar Mosque, Islamic Cairo, Cairo El-Ghouri Tanoura Group in Wekalet El-Ghouri, 9.30pm Expect traditional dance, vibrant music and colourful performances by El-Ghouri Dance Group this Saturday. They perform every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. 3 Mohamed Abdou Street, behind Al-Azhar Mosque, Cairo Sunday 19 July Mounib band in Wekalet El-Ghouri, 9pm Nubian band Mounib will perform their upbeat Nubian music, contemporarising traditional songs. Khaled Mounib, Nubian crooner Ahmed Mounib's son, founded the band to pay tribute to his father's musical legacy. Mounib perform often in cultural centers around Egypt. 3 Mohamed Abdou Street, behind Al-Azhar Mosque, Cairo Inshad by Zeen Mahmoud at Sufi Bookstore, 11pm Sheikh Zeen from Minya Governorate was originally a praiser (the one who sings in praise of the Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him), a posotion inherited from his father and grandfather. However, he wanted to get more involved in Sufi arts. After initial issues with his family, he managed to convert to Sufi singing and moved to Cairo to study under Sayed El-Dawy, one of the most iconic Sufi singers. He also worked with Arghoul musician Mostafa Abdel-Aziz before he moved to France, from which he toured most of Europe and produced his first album. Reservations are recommended. Call 01005696878 to reserve. 12 Sayid El-Bakry Street, Zamalek, Cairo Urban Visions: Three emerging artists atGIZ The Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) office in Egypt are collaborating to organise a collective exhibition by three emerging Egyptian artists: Ahmed Sabry, Ali Abdel Mohsen and Ramy Dozy.
