Al-Sisi, Cypriot president discuss Gaza ceasefire deal, bilateral cooperation
Published in Daily News Egypt on 11 - 10 - 2025

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi received a phone call on Saturday from Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss recent developments in the Middle East, particularly the ceasefire agreement reached in Sharm El-Sheikh aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy noted that President Christodoulides welcomed the agreement and expressed Cyprus's full support for its implementation, praising Egypt's pivotal role and President Al-Sisi's personal efforts in facilitating the deal.
During the call, President Al-Sisi briefed his Cypriot counterpart on the main elements of the ceasefire agreement, underscoring its importance in halting hostilities, securing the release of hostages and detainees, ensuring the sustained flow of humanitarian aid, and launching the reconstruction process in Gaza.
He stressed the need for the full implementation of all provisions, noting that Egypt had worked tirelessly over the past two years—alongside Qatar and the United States—to end the conflict and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people.
President Al-Sisi extended an invitation to President Christodoulides to attend a ceremony in Egypt marking the signing of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. He also emphasised the importance of deploying international forces in Gaza and securing a United Nations Security Council endorsement to grant the agreement international legitimacy.
Both leaders agreed on the urgency of initiating reconstruction efforts, with President Al-Sisi announcing Egypt's intention to host an international conference on early recovery and rebuilding. President Christodoulides welcomed the initiative and expressed Cyprus's readiness to participate in and support the process.
The conversation also touched on bilateral relations, with both presidents reviewing ways to enhance cooperation across political, trade, and investment fields. They agreed to build on the outcomes of their January 2025 summit to further expand collaboration in tourism, construction, agriculture, and other sectors of mutual interest.
President Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus's continued support for Egypt's positions within the European Union, affirming Nicosia's commitment to deepening coordination with Cairo on regional stability, energy cooperation, and joint development projects in the Eastern Mediterranean.
