UPDATE: Court allows release of ousted president Mubarak in illicit gains case Misdemeanor court does not renew detention period for Mubarak in illicit gains case; ousted dictator remains in jail on other corruption charges
Egypt's North Cairo misdemeanor court decides not to renew ousted autocratic president Hosni Mubarak's detention period pending investigations on charges of making illicit gains, Mubarak's lawyer Farid El-Deeb tells Ahram Online. However, prosecutors appealed the decision minutes later. Mubarak will remain in jail as he is facing corruption charges in two other court cases. Separately, the 84-year-old former president is also currently facing retrial on charges related to the killing of peaceful protesters during the 18-day 2011 uprising that led to his ouster. He was convicted in June 2012 of failing to protect protesters and slapped with a life sentence. In January 2013, an appeal court ordered a retrial for Mubarak and co-defendants due to procedural irregularities in the initial trial. Last spring, courts ordered his release in the murder trial because he had served the maximum sentence in his mandatory provisional detention. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/74353.aspx
