The media was not allowed into court in former president Hosni Mubarak's appeal session on Sunday after the presiding judge ordered the hearing be held in secret. The court is to rule on whether Mubarak will remain in detention or be released in the corruption case in which he is accused of making illicit gains using his former position. The 84-year-old former president, however, will not be released if he wins this appeal as he still faces detention in two other corruption cases in which he is accused of making private use of state money allocated for renovating presidential palaces, and of receiving gifts from state newspapers. Mubarak is currently being retried in the case of killing demonstrators during the 18-day uprising that led to his ouster. He was convicted in June 2012 of failing to protect peaceful protesters, and slapped with a life sentence. In January 2013, an appeal court ordered a retrial for Mubarak and his co-defendants due to procedural irregularities in the initial trial. Former interior minister Habib El-Adly and six of his top aides also face retrial for their role in the murder of protesters during the uprising. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/70277.aspx
