Bring on the heat in style! Summer trend roundup
Summer is here, which means beach, sun, fun - and a total wardrobe change; Here are the trends to help you fully enjoy looking great these next few months
Published in Ahram Online on 30 - 05 - 2013

Going along with Ella Fitzgerald's summertime and the living is easy, so is fashion this summer 2013 season.
This season catwalks for spring/summer 2013 displayed a wide range of fabrics, designs, patterns and creativity for fashionistas to embrace this summer and take pleasure in flaunting their figure in them. Every designer rocked their own signature on the catwalks providing us with those summer trends, starting with Elie Saab, who interupted his usual sleek, all-revealing sillhouette with Greek peplums; Dolce & Gabbana's artistic embellishments; studs meet bright colours on Michael Kors bags; and Marc Jacob insanely beautiful black and white stripes.
Ahram Online rounded up the hottest fashion trends from the runway for your wardrobes update:
##
Peplum
Peplum, Greek for "tunic," is this season's buzzword and can be found in various shapes and cuts accentuating the waist. High-end designer Elie Saab, for example, introduces peplums in clean-cut brightly-coloured dresses in full length and medium-length dresses. The bulge helps take the focus off the hip area and onto the waistline, which is the smallest area of the body. This makes a figure seem slimmer and better proportioned. Style the peplum this summer in a lady-like fresh look.
##
Flared skirt
Although this cannot be claimed as a totally new trend it is fascinating how the flared skirt can work for morning, evening, work or a night out. Different fabrics can give the flared skirt a different impression and you need only add a bright shirt, black lace top, or preppy collar to style your flare skirt; there is room for wardrobe choices for your flared skirt to add your own touch without being bound by a certain style to match it this summer.
##
Patterned trousers
Patterned trousers are a carry-over from last fall when the creative house of Prada introduced them. However, this summer those patterns are in silk and shiny materials in line with the summer trends. Labels such as Emilio Pucci, Balmain, Roberto Cavalli, Versace display oriental prints and patterns to diversify from West to East, taking trousers to a new artistic level.
##
White on white
White: the colour of peace and serenity associated with innocence, light and a clear spectrum. This season white has been displayed by several designers such as Valentino, Simone Rocha and Stella on the runway, giving our eyesight a break from bright neons that smashed onto the scene last year to a more relaxing colour. The look of white on white this summer is ultra modern, with a nod to the '60s, giving you more room to accessorise, look fresh and innocent.
##
Lines and stripes
Designers took stripes to a whole new level this season. Bold, persistent straight lines beautifully captures the eye whether on a blazer, trousers or dresses. The trick is the effects it provides, since vertical stripes play a slimming optical illusion they are sexy on a fitted pencil skirt and can give a symmetrical, well-balanced look on trousers. Horizontal lines can make you look wider, so they make a great contrast on a preppy top. Go ahead and stripe your figure the way you want.
##
Floral
Are flowers still "in" from last season? Yes. Stars have taken them to heart and are wearing them everywhere - even the red carpet. There's something appealing about fresh garden flower prints – they seem to cool down the burning summer sun. However, this season they are styled in '60s daisy bombshell; they can be "cas(ual)," or rocked at night with trousers and heels. Their timelessness, femininity and freshness helped them pick up popularity this season.
##
Structures and checkers
It wasn't a surprise to see checkers starting to trend once we trace the origin to the house of Louis Vuitton. It is also no wonder it was inspired from their best-selling, iconic damier pattern. Surprise! Later it was embraced by all designers as this summer's trend. Bold, creative and nothing speaks "trendy" better than seeing something new, in contrast to the dullness of a repeat of an old trend, which is why it received the deserved attention this season.
