Seven alleged Black Bloc members arrested in Egypt Egypt's State Security Prosecution detains seven alleged members of the anarchist-inspired Black Bloc youth group charged with aiming to destroy the country
Egypt's State Security Prosecution ordered Saturday the detention for 15 days of seven alleged members of the Black Bloc — a black-clad anarchist-inspired youth group opposed to Islamist President Mohamed Morsi — Ahram Arabic news website reported Saturday. The group, which has so far garnered over 20,000 online followers on its Facebook page, stated it was formed as "a natural result of the absence of retribution (for the marytrs of the January 25 Revolution)." The Black Bloc made its first appearance on the eve of the second anniversary of the January 2011 revolution with the primary aim of fighting the Muslim Brotherhood from which President Mohamed Morsi hails. Members of the group typically dress in black and mask their faces. In January, Egypt's public prosecutor, Talaat Abdallah, ordered the arrest of all members of the Black Bloc after the group disrupted traffic and Cairo's Metro line. He accused the group of acts of terrorism. Abdallah urged the police and Egypt's armed forces to arrest anyone suspected of affiliation to the group. He also called upon citizens to provide any information they have about the group or its members to assist in their arrest. Last week, Abdullah ordered the arrest of 22 suspected group members on charges that the group commits terrorist acts, violence, thefts and destruction of public and private property, state news agency MENA said. A travel ban has also been placed on the alleged members. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/69749.aspx
