Egypt's prosecutor general orders arrest of 22 Black Bloc members Talaat Abdullah has ordered the arrest of 22 individuals for 'founding and funding the Black Bloc in Egypt'
Prosecutor-General Talaat Abdallah ordered to arrest 22 individuals Wednesday, charging them, on the basis of national security investigations, with founding and funding the anarchist-inspired Black Bloc group in Egypt, according to Al-Ahram Arabic language news website. The group made its first appearance on the eve of the Egyptian revolution's second anniversary, declaring its mission to be "liberating the people, ending corruption and bringing down tyrants." On 29 January, Abdallah ordered the arrest of all members of the Black Bloc, after the group disrupted traffic and Cairo's Metro line. Abdallah directed police and Egypt's armed forces to arrest anyone suspected of being affiliated with the group. He also urged citizens to provide any information they have about the group or its members and assist in their arrest by authorities. Internationally, the Black Bloc has appeared in protests in Europe, particularly in Germany in the 1970s, and in anti-globalisation protests in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Black Bloc groups usually mask their faces during protests. They uphold that resort to violence, especially against property, has a place in the realisation of revolutionary goals. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/69501.aspx
