Mubarak-era culture minister acquitted of corruption charges Investigation by the Illicit Gains Authority proved nothing against Farouk Hosni, the ex-Minister of Culture
Former Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni was found innocent of illicit gain charges on Saturday by Giza's criminal court. Hosni was accused of abusing his authorities to illegally collect a fortune from October 1987 to January 2011. Last September, a Cairo administrative court had reversed a verdict freezing Hosni's LE9million ($1.5 million) worth of financial assets, with investigation by the Illicit Gains Authority failing to incriminate him. Hosni, along with other former ministers, was placed under a travel ban following the January 25 Revolution, which ousted ex-president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. Recently, a number of former regime figures facing corruption charges were granted retrials, some of whom were also released on bail such as ex-secretary general of Mubarak's National Democratic Party, Safwat El-Sherif, and former minister of information, Anas El-Fiqqi. Mubarak sons, Alaa and Gamal, were also acquitted of corruption accusations last year but they remain in custody facing other charges relating to alleged stock market manipulation. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/61832.aspx
