Ex-chief of Egypt state TV El-Sheikh released on bail Accused of squandering public money, Osama El-Sheikh is bailed following December ruling granting him a retrial
Former chief of state TV Osama El-Sheikh was granted release Saturday on LE50,000 ($7,790) bail by South Cairo Criminal Court. El-Sheikh, accused of squandering public money through buying TV series at a higher price then they were worth, was granted a retrial 17 December. El-Sheikh's release was received with joy by his supporters who chanted, "Where is the press? Here is the honourable man!" Also granted a retrial and facing corruption charges alongside El-Sheikh is Mubarak-era former Minister of Information Anas El-Fiqqi, who is accused of gathering illicit gains of LE12 million by exemptingEgyptian satellite channels from fees for broadcasting football matches during the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. El-Fiqqi and El-Sheikh were both arrested 24 February 2012 as part of a probe into political corruption under the Mubarak regime. On 25 December, former secretary general of Mubarak's now-defunct National Democratic Party (NDP), Safwat El-Sherif, who is facing corrupt charges, was also granted release on bail of LE50,000. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/61804.aspx
