Funeral prayers Nasr City mosque start for 16 Egyptians soldiers killed during Sunday's Sinai attack; SCAF members and ex-presidential candidate Sabbahi attend as protesters chant against President Morsi
Coffins of the 16 Egyptian border guards killed during Sunday's deadly attack in the Sinai Peninsula has arrived to Al-Rashdan Mosque in Nasr City amid heavy security presence, for prayers before the military funeral is due to take place.
A number of the families of the slain officers are already present, along with hundreds of well-wishers and mourners.
Eliminated presidential contenders Hamdeen Sabbahi and Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh, Minister of Sports El-Amri Farouk and members of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) including Chief of Staff Sami Anan were also spotted at the funeral prayers.
Outside the mosque, Ahram Online journalist Ekram Ibrahim reports that tens of protesters are chanting against the Muslim Brotherhood's Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie and President Mohamed Morsi, who they hold ultimately responsible for the deaths.
The president along with SCAF head Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi are expected to attend the funeral later today.
On Sunday evening 35 unknown assailants reportedly hijacked a military vehicle and attacked the Egypt-Gaza border at around 7pm. 16 Egyptian security officers were killed and seven others injured, as the attackers opened fire on them.
Investigations by Egyptian authorities into the attack are still ongoing as no group has claimed responsibility.
