Egyptian League: Abou-Treika's 100th goal not enough for Ahly Mohamed Abou-Treika's 100th Premier League goal was not enough for Ahly after they were held to a draw by Maqassa in Manuel Jose's first match in charge
Mohamed Abou-Treika notched his 100thEgyptian Premier League goal today, but Ahly failed to give coach Manuel Jose a winning start after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Maqassa. The result prevented the defending champions from narrowing their six-point gap on leaders and arch-rivals Zamalek, who had to settle for a goalless draw with El-Entag El-Harby on Friday. Ahly had to do without injured midfielders Ahmed Fathi and Hossam Ashour, in addition to striker Mohamed Fadl who has been ruled out for three weeks with a hamstring injury. Classy playmaker Abou-Treika converted a penalty in the 27thminute after Mohamed Barakat was felled in the area, but Ahly were not able to preserve their lead. Four minutes later, Maqassa forward Sameh Aidaros grabbed the equaliser with a poacher's goal after an earlier header by a teammate struck the bar. Maqassa could have even claimed all three points after producing a spirited display in the second half, thanks to the introduction of lively playmaker Ayman Hefny.Hefny, who played his last match with Maqassa before joining Gaish, caused Ahly's defence all sorts of problems with his dribbling skills, but his side wasted two clear-cut opportunities to score the second goal. Ahly were also close to notching a decisive goal in the dying minutes, but substitute Emad Meteb, who played his first game after rejoining the club this month, blasted a shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Portuguese tactician Jose took charge of the club for a third stint following the resignation of Hossam El-Badry, but the Red Devils let him down. Ahly remain fifth in the League table with 26 points, three behind second-placed Ismaily and six adrift of Zamalek. Maqassa are ninth with 20 points.
